Istán is sitated at the end of the world just behind Marbella. At least with the car the travel is at its end in Istán. Where is Istán? Now, for many years only a few tourists lost their way and reached Istán. Now, for several years only a few tourists lost their way and reached Istán. Today everything has changed.

Istán is still like a sleeping village in the mountains, but there are some things which can make the village more and more attractive for tourists. The inhabitants of Istán are friendly and for us Istán is the special climber at all. The people did all with hard work and love to feel good on the main place of the village. And don´t be taken by the first view and the entrance of the village Istán.

When you drive from Marbella in the direction to Istán, then you will first drive under the new built motorway. After that you will see the most important change of the last years. The reservoir. By our visit in september 99 the reservoir had not much water and that is no wonder because of the drought.

On the way to Istán you drive on a good road with fantastic rocks beside. You are now behind the mountain, which let you have the stunning view from Marbella. Here in the hinterland the mountain will appear more bigger and you wonder how people can climb and climb to build their home here on the rocks.

Then you will reach the village and the first impression is not breathtaking. Here you see houses built which you don´t come up to the visitor´s expectations. Park your car here at the beginning of the village. Walk through the beautiful alleys and enjoy the stunning view to the reservoir.

By walking through the village you notice very quick that the first impression is not for all things of the village. Istán is long ago a place for tourists. The doors of the houses are open and it gives the visitor the feeling: "You are welcome".

Also friendly and honest were the people of the townhall (Ayuntamiento/photo below, right house). Here you can get more informations about Istán and they help if you have questions. We liked also the design and decoration inside. The inhabitants welcome us always friendly and perhaps the quiet in the mountain makes the people be more calm.

The first idea could be to live here and to buy a plot. Now, to build a house in this region won´t be easy and the costs to make the access in the rocks to your home you must also think about. Istán has also to loose its innocence and we hope that they don´t agree to constructions at all costs. It can be nice to visit Istán how it is now.

Behind Istán there is no good road access, only country lanes to the nature reserve. The panorama picture shows Istán from its most beautiful side, from behinde. It would be nice for the visitors if the road would be extended to enjoy the stunning view to the village from behind. But it won´t take a long time we think and perhaps in the near future you can drink your coffee with panorama view, and the high-class cars parking beside on a big car park and sparkling in the sun.
